What is Emirates ID?

L’Emirates Identity Card is a biometric card issued by the’Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP). It is compulsory for all foreign nationals holding a valid residence or work visa in the Emirates.

It contains a number of identification elements, including :

  • A unique identity number
  • Biometric data (fingerprints)
  • A secure electronic chip
  • The holder's personal details

Who needs to obtain an Emirates ID?

How do I obtain an Emirates ID?

2. Biometric appointment

Once the application has been validated, the applicant is called to a PKI service centre to have fingerprints, a biometric photo and a signature taken.

3. Processing and printing the card

Once the data has been validated, the Emirates ID is printed and sent to an approved post office, where it can be collected on presentation of the passport and the confirmation SMS.

What are the processing times?

On average, it takes between 5 and 10 working days, from the time of the biometric pass. In certain cases (particularly during periods of high demand or when additional checks are required), this deadline may be extended.

Accelerated processing options are available, in particular via specialised service providers, reducing this time to 48 to 72 hours in certain specific cases.

How long is the Emirates ID valid for?

The validity of the Emirates ID is directly linked to that of the residence visa. It generally varies between :

  • 2 years for standard residents
  • 3 years for certain professional categories
  • 5 to 10 years for holders of long-stay visas (investors, Golden Visa)

The card must be renewed at the same time as the visa. Failure to renew may result in fines and administrative complications.
